J. Andrew Noel, Jr. is an American sports administrator.
He graduated from
Franklin and Marshall College , Lancaster, Pa., in 1972 with a B.A. in history.Upon graduation, Noel became an assistant wrestling coach and physical education instructor at
Cornell University . Noel was head wrestling coach from 1974 to 1988. His wrestling teams won four Ivy League championships and placed second four times.In 1988-89, Noel was an assistant director in the Cornell athletics department public affairs office, assisting with the implementation of the athletics annual giving program.
Noel left Cornell to become product marketing manager for Deanco Inc. of
Ithaca, New York . Noel then became a partner and co-owner of Advantage Sport and Fitness Inc. in Ithaca.Noel returned to Cornell as an associate athletics director in 1996 until his appointment as Athletic Director in 1999. Since becoming director, Noel has continued to hire top coaches and has also successfully upgraded a number of department facilities (including renovating Schoellkopf Hall and
Lynah Rink and building the Friedman Wrestling Center).In addition to his coaching and administrative career, Noel has served on the wrestling committee of the National Collegiate Athletic Association since 1997. In that same year, he also became a member of the board of directors of the Special Children's Center in Ithaca. In 1990, he was recognized at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships for his distinguished coaching career at Cornell, and in 1992 he was inducted into the New York State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
