Bagdi (caste)

The Bagdi are a caste group in West Bengal State and in Bangladesh.

They have been classed as one of the criminal tribes of India and accused of robbing other people. [http://www.boloji.com/analysis/011.htm] On the other hand people have suggested that the Bengalis have at times underpaid the Bagdi in commercial transactions and withheld key information in ways that have amounted to robbery. Most of the Bagdi are fishermen. They are said to be of Dravidian descent. [http://banglapedia.search.com.bd/HT/B_0031.htm]

They are also called the Bagadi, Bagri, Bogada, Byagra, Kshatriya, Duley, Malia Bagdi or Mete.

There are over three and a half million Bagdi (35 lak).
