The B1149 is the most direct route between the town of Holt and the city of Norwich [County A to Z Atlas, Street & Road maps Norfolk, ISBN 978 1 84348 614 5] . There is no direct A road alternative. The road joins the A140 north of the city at a traffic island close to Norwich International AirportTravelling from north to south the road passes through:-

*Edgefield
*Saxthorpe
*Corpusty
*Horsford

History

The route of the B1149 can be seen clearly on Faden’s large-scale map (at one inch to the mile) of the county of Norfolk of 1779 [Faden’s Map of Norfolk 1797, Digitally redrawn in 2005 by Andrew Macnair. North Central Map ISBN 13 978 0 9550398 2 9] which shows that this road’s route has changed very little over the years, even after the Parliamentary Enclosure of the early 19th century. On this early map the road has the attribute of the Norwich to Cley next the Sea [ [http://www.fadensmapofnorfolk.co.uk/mapBrowserNew.asp?TileId=33&Zoom=0] Faden’s Map Digitally redrawn] road a reference that indicates this roads importance back further to the 13th century when Cley was a busy medieval sea port. The road would have been used by the wealthy merchants of Norwich to transport there goods to the port where a healthy trade was carried out between Norfolk and the Low Countries.

Notable points North-west to South-east

Approximately 1 mile on the left from Holt the road passes Holt Country Park ["OS Explorer Map 24 - Norfolk Coast Central". ISBN 0 319 21726 4.] .At Saxthorpe (5.8 miles) the road now has a by-pass to avoid a bridge over the river Bure in Corpusty which has a 7.5t weight restriction which until recent times meant a large detour for HGV travelling from Norwich to Holt [ [http://www.committees.norfolk.gov.uk/papers/cabinet/planhigh71201/b1149corsaxt.pdf] B1149 Corpusty/Saxthorpe Link RoadSpeed Restriction] . At the roundabout at the northern end of the Corpusty bypass the road is joined from the west by the B1354 from Thursford.

After 10.8 the road is dissected by the B1145 that connects Kings Lynn to Mundesley on the North-north East coast of Norfolk.

Congestion

In the morning and evening rush hour the road gets very congested at its south westerly end were it converges with the A140 at a Roundabout. It is planned that the Norwich northern relief road will one day also dissect the A140 and the B1149 at this point( Subject to planning).
