Chaturon Chaisang

Chaturon Chaisang (Thai: จาตุรนต์ ฉายแสง born January 1, 1956 in Chachoengsao) is a Thai politician and former Deputy Prime Minister. He was a leader of the New Aspiration Party, and became an ally of Thaksin Shinawatra when New Aspiration merged into Thai Rak Thai after the 2001 general elections.

Education

Chaisang earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics at the State University of New York at Buffalo in the United States, as well as a Master of Arts in economics from The American University in Washington, D.C.; and is an A.B.D. graduate student of economic development and public finance at The American University.

Politics

Chaisang was a Member of Parliament from Chachoengsao from 1986 until the 2006 Thai coup d'état. A member of the New Aspiration Party, he served in a succession of roles such as Assistant Secretary to the Minister of Finance (1986–1987), Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, Secretary or Chairman of various parliamentary committees, and eventually higher roles. When New Aspiration merged into Thai Rakh Thai after the 2001 general elections, he became a Shinawatra ally. After the coup, with Shinawatra and key party executives either abroad or arrested, Chaisang became the acting party leader after Sudarat Keyuraphan declined to do so.[1]
