Sarakinoi

Sarakinoi (Greek: Σαρακηνοί) is a village and a municipal district in the municipality of Aridaia in the western Pella Prefecture, Greece. It is located in the Vorras border mountain range. Its 2001 population was 375 for the village and 471 for the municipal district. It was known as Sarakinovo. It lies on the road connecting Aridaia via Polykarpo and the GR-2 (Florina - Thessaloniki - Alexandroupoli - Pelopio) and will connect with a future (not uncertain) superhighway (the new GR-2). Its elevation is 570 m and overlooks the Maglenitsa Valley including the river that empties into the Loudias or the Aliakmon and the Thermian Gulf.

Location and transportation

Sarakini is located SW of Aridaia, WNW of Thessaloniki and north of Edessa.

The village has about 3 to 4 km of paved road, 3 to 4 km of gravel road and has about 2 to 3 km of hydro and phone lines.

Geography

Most of the area are made up of forests, farmlands covers a part of the area.

People

History

Prior to the Second Balkan War, the village was largely Slavic speaking. After World War II and the Greek Civil War emigration occurred. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed/expanded municipality of Aridaia. In the early 1920s, refugees arrived from Asia Minor during the Asia Minor Catastrophe when they fled from the Turks, the Slavic speaking inhabitants moved mainly northward.

Other

There is an elementary school, a church and a square. The nearest high school is in Aridaia.

Its economy is based mainly on agricultural products.
