- Jean Carondelet
Jean Carondelet (1469-1544) was a Burgundian cleric and advisor to Prince Charles, later Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, and a patron of
Erasmus . He was the older brother ofFerry Carondelet .Jean Carondelet was appointed dean of the
University of Franche-Comté atBesançon in 1493.Prince Charles's mother,
Juana of Castile was insane, and his aunt Margaret of Austria, theregent of the Spanish Netherlands, was his guardian. Prince Charles became acquainted with Jean Carondolet through his brother (Ferry Carondelet) who was the confessor to Margaret of Austria. Jean Carondelet soon became a close advisor to Prince Charles, and in 1517-1519, after Charles had assumed the Spanish throne, Jean Carondelet accompanied him to Spain as a member of his privy council.Later Jean Carondelet became the archbishop of
Palermo , although he never resided there. He followed his brother as the abbot at Montbenoît. He died Feb. 7, 1544 at the family home inMechelen ,Flanders .ources
