His Majesty's Theatre, Western Australia

His Majesty's Theatre (nicknamed "The Maj") is a theatre in Perth, Western Australia. It is located on the corner of Hay Street and King Street in Perth's central business district.

A heritage icon, the theatre has hosted large scale musicals, ballet, opera and Shakespearean plays.

The West Australian Ballet and West Australian Opera companies are both housed at the theatre, performing regularly.

History

His Majesty's Theatre opened on Christmas eve 1904. The building, designed by architect William Wolfe and constructed by Gustav Liebe, is an example of Edwardian architecture. The theatre and adjoining hotel were built for 42,000 pounds in two years, amidst the gold boom early in the 20th century. His Majesty's Theatre is home to the West Australian Opera and the West Australian Ballet.

In 2004 the theatre had centenary celebrations and events - including the publications of David Hough's volume of history.

In 2006 His Majesty's Theatre, Perth, Western Australia became 'twinned' with His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen, Scotland.
