:"See also: A2 highway"

Upon entering Croatia, E59 follows highway-status roads except for a few hundred meters near the Macelj/Gruškovje border crossing. Immediatelly after the crossing, the European route follows the Croatian A2 highway all the way to Zagreb. Travellers using the highway are required to pay toll. A toll-free alternative (also sometimes signed as E59) is offered in the shape of occasional parts of the old alignment of State route D1 (D1 is now mostly concurrent with highways) and county roads which operate as frontage roads to a degree. It is not recommended to divert one's route to bypass the toll segment of the highway without knowing Croatian and a very good up-to-date map of northwest Croatia, since the alternative route is old and badly signed. Also, frontage roads tend to be congested near Zagreb near and during rush hour.

Frontage roads cease to exist in suburban Zagreb, at the Zaprešić interchange and by continuing straight the traveller is able to get to Zaprešić and center of Zagreb by Maršal Tito Road. The mainline toll plaza is also located north of the interchange. Southbound the A2 continues as toll-free Zagreb bypass. E59 passes only through one interchange, Jankomir before ending at Lučko interchange. Due to the fact that many routes are concurrent with the Zagreb bypass, motorists going north by E59 are advised to follow signs for A2 highway, not E59 route. Zagreb bypass also experiences heavy traffic between Jankomir and Lučko and jams on exit ramps in Lučko are frequent during summer weekends.
