Auchenharvie Academy

Auchenharvie Academy is a secondary education school based in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland. It is a comprehensive school which takes children from the ages of 11 - 18 from Stevenston and Saltcoats of North Ayrshire Area.

History

The school was opened in August 1971 after the closure of Stevenston Higher Grade, which had served the town as the main source of primary and secondary education for many years. The site of Stevenston High has been occupied by Glencairn Primary School since 1982.

How Auchenharvie Academy First Started The Stages

* March 1957 - Joint Committee Set up
* February 1958 - Groundsmen Operate a Rota For Weekend Supervision
* January 1963 - Decision to lower a seven foot high boundary wall
* December 1963 - The Old Community centre allowed to pay rates arrears by easy stages
* April 1964 - Grounds to be newly seeded, A Second hand tractor bought for 170.00
* September 1967 - Ayr County Council Proposed new senior secondary school to replace the old Stevenston Higher Grade, and to be at Auchenharvie instead of the High Road
* November 1967 - Agreement on name "Proposed" Auchenharvie Academy
* All of 1968 - Arguments about a swimming pool - should it be at the new Academy, or elsewhere, or should there be two - a training pool at the school and a public one?

In the News

The school was a victim of a break in by a gang of youths who consequently set fire to the rear of the school on the 6th August 2005. Unfortunately the building company who were rebuilding the kitchen went into liquidation. The kitchen has recently been completed and was opened to the pupils on October 22nd 2007 when they returned from the October holidays.
