- Raymond L. Orbach
Raymond Lee Orbach is an American
physicist and administrator. He currently serves asUnder Secretary for Science in theUnited States Department of Energy .Orbach received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the
California Institute of Technology in1956 and a Ph.D. degree in Physics from theUniversity of California, Berkeley , in1960 . Orbach began his academic career as a postdoctoral fellow atOxford University in 1960 and became an assistant professor of applied physics atHarvard University in1961 . He joined the faculty of theUniversity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) two years later as an associate professor, and became a full professor in1966 .Orbach's research in theoretical and experimental physics has resulted in the publication of more than 240 scientific articles, and he is a fellow of the
American Physical Society and theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science .From
1982 to1992 , he served as the Provost of the College of Letters and Science at UCLA, and from 1992 to2002 as Chancellor of theUniversity of California, Riverside .Since
March 14 , 2002, Orbach has been Director of the Office of Science at the Department of Energy, making him the highest ranking science policy administrator within the DOE. SinceJune 1 ,2006 , he has been the firstUnder Secretary for Science , for which PresidentGeorge W. Bush nominated him after the position was created by theEnergy Policy Act of 2005 .Orbach was born in
Los Angeles, California . He is married to Eva S. Orbach. They have three children, David, Debbie, and Randy, and seven grandchildren, Kevin, Grant, Erin, Katie, Brian, Nicole, & Dylan.External links
