His schooling was at Mirzapur Cadet College, which was followed by graduation and postgraduation in economics from Dhaka University and a Ph.D from SOAS in London. He has since played a major role in the much publicised microcredit revolution in Bangladesh, serving in Mohammed Yunus' National Task Force on Poverty Eradication and as Chairman of the Janata Bank, Bangladesh's second largest bank, and on the Board of Sonali Bank, Bangladesh's largest. He has worked for a long time in BIDS (Bangladesh Institute for Development Studies) and is now also the chairman of the nonprofit research institute Unnayan Shamunnay. As of 2008, he is a professor of Development Studies at the University of Dhaka.
