St. Francis River (Maine)

The St. Francis River is a river roughly 75 miles long in Quebec and Maine, forming the international boundary between Canada and the U.S. The river rises in a lake of the same name located convert|12|mi east of the Rivière du Loup. The portion that forms the boundary starts at the bottom of Lake Pohenegamook at the very northernmost point of Maine in Estcourt Station, Maine, and flows generally south east to its mouth on the St. John River. [Bailey 1894 pp. 27-28 ]

USS Bancroft (DD-256) became a Canadian ship as part of the Destroyers for Bases Agreement; and was named after the St. Francis River to follow the Canadian tradition of naming destroyers after Canadian rivers while recognizing the shared national history of the ship. [Milner 1985 p.23]
