The United Nations Operations in Mozambique (ONUMOZ) was established in October 1992[1][2] under Security Council Resolution 797 on the basis of a report submitted by the Secretary-General.[3]

Its purpose was to help implement the General Peace Agreement, signed between the President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, and the President of the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (Renamo), Afonso Dhlakama. The mandate included facilitating the implementation of the Agreement; monitoring the ceasefire; monitoring the withdrawal of foreign forces and providing security in the transport corridors; providing technical assistance and monitoring the entire electoral process. ONUMOZ operated from December of 1992 to December of 1994.

The Argentine Air Force Mobile Field Hospital was deployed in the country under this mandate [4]
