Mark R. Herring (born September 25, 1961, in Johnson City, Tennessee)[1] is an American politician. A Democrat, he was elected to the Senate of Virginia, in a special election on January 31, 2006, winning against Republican candidate Mick Staton. He currently represents the 33rd district, made up of parts of Fairfax and Loudoun Counties.[1][2]

Herring was educated at University of Virginia (B.A., Foreign Affairs and Economics); University of Virginia (M.A., Foreign Affairs); University of Richmond (J.D.).[1] He served in elected office on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors from 2000 to 2003,[3] and was the Town Attorney for Lovettsville from 1992 to 1999. He is the principal with The Herring Law Firm, P.C., in Leesburg, Virginia. His practice includes business and corporate law, civil litigation, land use law, municipal law, wills, trusts, and estates.[citation needed] He is admitted to practice before the Virginia Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, and United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia.[citation needed] Senator Herring is a member of The George Washington University Paralegal Studies Programs advisory board.[citation needed]
