William Staite Murray

William Staite Murray

William Staite Murray (1881 - 1962) was an English studio potter.

He was born in Deptford, London and attended pottery classes at Camberwell College of Arts from 1909 - 1912 and set up his own pottery in Rotherhithe, London in the premises of his brother's engineering and foundry works in 1919.

He was appointed Head of Ceramics at The Royal College of Art London in 1926. ["Studio Pottery" by Oliver Watson Phaidon Press Ltd ISBN 978-0714829487] He believed pottery was a fine art medium, with the same importance as painting and sculpture.
