Facilities

Wales National Velodrome

The Wales National Velodrome includes a 250-metre Siberian pine track, a function room/dance studio, free weights room, fitness suite, a drug-testing room and a multipurpose indoor sports arena. It has seating for 500 spectators. The velodrome hosts the Head Office of Welsh Cycling.

Swimming pool

The Swimming pool and Tennis Centre

The swimming pool was built to replace the art deco Maindee baths as Newport's senior competition pool. The pool is a 25-metre, 8-lane competition pool with a movable floor. There is also a training pool (20m x 7m) that backs onto the main pool and over 500 seats for spectators in the main pool.

Tennis Centre

The Tennis Centre is one of the original buildings in the village. When the pool was built, it was built onto the existing centre. The Tennis Centre holds many sports. It also has cricket nets in one hall.

Cricket pitches

The village has two cricket pitches and has been the home of Newport Cricket Club since 1990. A pavilion separates the two pitches with a small seating area in the pavilion looking onto one pitch. Cricket nets were installed behind the astroturf in 2003-04 for the summer months. There are also Cricket nets in the Tennis Centre for the winter.

Newport Skate Park

The concrete Skate Park opened in October 2008 at a construction cost of over £200,000. It was designed in consultation with local skate boarders and Newport Youth Council to meet the needs of both beginners and experienced skate boarders.

Squash Courts

Near the cricket pavilion are squash courts and gymnasiums. There was originally 6 squash courts but the decline of squash in Newport has led to some courts being refitted to become gyms.

Astroturf

The astroturf is used for both hockey and Football. Many local football teams train there for upcoming games. The astroturf is also home to a 7-a-side football league. The league has five divisions: the Premier Elite, divisions 1, 2 & 3, and the Conference. Conference games are played on Wednesday and Friday nights, and all other matches take place on Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings.

Newport Stadium

Newport Stadium

Newport Stadium is the primary athletics and football venue for Newport. The stadium, which is owned and managed by Newport City Council, has been upgraded to Nationwide Conference standard in recent years and has a crowd capacity of 4,700. It is used by Newport County A.F.C., Llanwern A.F.C. and Newport Harriers Athletic club.

FAW National Football Centre

The Football Association of Wales, Welsh Football Trust and Newport City Council are planning to build a National Football Centre to develop the under-21, women's and younger age-group squads. The development will include four state-of-the-art new pitches, including a top-grade artificial surface. The centre will also provide headquarters for the Welsh Football Trust, the game's development body, with analysis suites, sports science laboratories and coach education facilities also proposed.[1]
