Metropolitan and St John's Wood Railway

Metropolitan and St John's Wood Railway

The Metropolitan & St. John's Wood Railway was a subsidiary holding company for the first northward branch extension from Baker Street of the Metropolitan Railway (now the Metropolitan Line).

The line between Baker Street and Swiss Cottage opened in April 1868. It had two intermediate stations: Marlborough Road and St. John's Wood Road. Early plans indicate that the extension was to continue to Hampstead High Street, however this was never built (most likely due to lack of funds) and eventual extension was to Harrow via Finchley Road instead.

Because initially the line wasn't of high importance for Metropolitan Railway it was built only with single running track. In 1872 however Metropolitan & St. John's Wood Railway was merged with parent company and the line was doubled to become a central point in Metropolitan's major expansion to the suburbs.
