Batara Kala

Batara Kala

In traditional Balinese mythology, Batara Kala is the god of the underworld, ruling over it in a cave along with Setesuyara. Batara Kala is also named the creator of the light and the earth.

On the first page of the novel Child of All Nations (second novel of the Buru Quartet by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, translated from the Indonesian by Max Lane) we read of Batara Kala, a mighty God "who makes all things move further and further from their starting point, inexhorably, towards some unknown final destination." Herein lie hints of entropy and an expanding universe.
