The "acanthus" stands for "The Fine Arts", and its graceful leaves were loved by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used them as decorations in the capitals of Corinthian and Composit columns; it is said that they were grown in the garden of Plato's Academia.

The roots of Kanazawa University can be traced back to 1862 when the Kaga Domain established Hikoso Vaccination Center. Ishikawa Normal School, Kanazawa Higher Normal School, Ishikawa Youth Normal School, Kanazawa Medical School, and Kanazawa Technical College were integrated in May 1949 to form Kanazawa University. It has continuously and substantially contributed to the development of higher education in Japan as well as global promotion of research by offering various undergraduate and graduate courses.

Kanazawa University is divided into three main campuses, Kakuma, Takaramachi, and Kodatsuno campus. Student enrollment is about 11,000 including 350 international students.
