David Klein (governor of the Bank of Israel)

David Klein ( _he. דוד קליין; born 1935) served as the governor of the Bank of Israel from 2000 - 2005.

Klein received his higher education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, obtaining a BA in 1959 in general history and economics. In 1971 he obtained his PhD in economics from George Washington University in the United States.

1959 to 1966

Klein served in the budget department of the Israel Ministry of Finance. He was responsible for a ministry's budget. He assisted the team that established the town of Arad and was responsible for the long-term planning of the government budget. During 196 he was a senior economist of an inter-disciplinary team for rehabilitating the town of Qazvin in Iran after an earthquake.

1966 to 1972

Klein served at the International Monetary Fund in the United Sates in the Fiscal Affairs Department with responsibility for fiscal policy in developing countries. He was a member of IMF delegations for annual consultations with member-countries.

1972 to 1976

Klein then served in the Tevel Institute of Policy Studies in Jerusalem. The institute is jointly owned by the Israeli government and an American investor. He developed an econometric model for (and in cooperation with) the budget department of the Israel Ministry of Finance for assessing the impact of the budget on the economy. He was also a member of the institute's management.

1976 to 1987

Klein subsequently worked for the Bank Leumi Le-Israel in a number of capacities: He was senior economist and member of the management; Head of the strategic planning division; Deputy director, business division; Chairman, fees committee; Member, provident and trust funds' investment committees.

1987 to 2000

At the Bank of Israel Klein has been: Member, management of the Bank of Israel; Head of monetary and foreign exchange supervision departments; Bank of Israel representative on board of directors of the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.
