Wertheim Piano

Wertheim Piano

Wertheim is an Australian brand of pianos, formerly produced at Richmond in Melbourne Australia.

History

The Wertheim business was established by Hugo Wertheim.

The Wertheim piano factory was established in 1908 and production continued until 1935. It is estimated that 18,000 pianos were produced.

During the Depression era, sales of pianos declined. Also, social change took place, with the advent of recorded music and the introduction of radio. These provided low cost forms of entertainment in the home which ultimately ousted the piano from its place as a focal point of home entertainment.

The Wertheim factory was taken over by Heinz and became the site for food preserving. Then, with the advent of television in 1956, the disused factory became the studios for the GTV 9 television station.

Types

Wertheim made upright pianos .

Wertheim today

The Wertheim brand continues to be used on a range of pianos which are manufactured overseas.
