Battle of Grudziądz

Battle of Grudziądz during the 1939 German invasion of Poland occurred on the September 1 - September 3, 1939.

The border city of Grudziądz contained headquarters of several Polish military formations, as well as several military schools. It was defended by the "Grudziądz Detached Group" under col. Stefan Cieślak, part of Army Pomorze. The city was assaulted by the German XIX Corps. On 2 September Poles counterattacked and pushed Germans out of the nearby region, but the situation in other areas next day forced the Polish high command to pull the units back less they would be surrounded. Polish defenders held until September 3, when in the evening they retreated. Germans occupied the city on the following day,
