Ioannis Gounaris

Ioannis Gounaris

Ioannis Gounaris (Greek: Γιάννης Γούναρης; born 6 July 1952) is a retired Greek footballer.

During his career he played for PAOK FC and Olympiacos FC. He earned 27 caps for the Greece national football team, and participated in UEFA Euro 1980.Gounaris was far ahead of his time playing as a full-back in the early seventies. He plowed the whole right wing from defence to offence. For sure he was the first one to do so in Greece along with his other side wing playmate Kostas Iosifidis.PAOK was the happy one to have these young talented full-backs around at the same time but so did the Greek national team also. The two of them, were a very important part of the PAOK team who won the first championship in the history of the club and played in 7 cup finals from 1970 to 1978.Although Iosifidis kept playing for PAOK his whole career,Gounaris decided to transfer to PAOK worst rivals Olympiakos when his 12 year contract was over. That was a move that PAOK fans never really forgave, but that don't change the fact that Gounaris was one of the club greats and always will be remembered from PAOK fans for his fatal crosses and his unceasing up and downs on the right wing.He also coached PAOK during the nineties.
