José Augusto Teixeira da Silva (born
24 February 1961 ) has been a member of theFirst Quorum of the Seventy ofThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) since April 2008. Teixeira is the first Portuguesegeneral authority in LDS Church history.Early life, education, and career
Teixeira was born in
Vila Real ,Portugal . The LDS Church was not organized in Portugal until 1974, 14 years after Teixeira was born.As a young man, Teixeira served as a missionary in the Portugal
Lisbon Mission of the LDS Church. He received a degree inaccounting from Jaime Cortesao Technical School and a degree inbusiness management from IAT-Technical Improvement Institute.Prior to his becoming a general authority, Teixeira was employed as an international controller for the LDS Church in
Frankfurt ,Germany , where he oversaw church finances inEurope andAfrica .LDS Church service
From 1994 to 1996, Teixeira was president of the Lisbon Portugal
Oeiras Stake of the LDS Church. In 1996, he became area authority in the church. At this point he was the regional manager of the church's area office based in Portugal. Teixeira remained an area seventy until 2005. From 2005 to 2008, he served as president of theBrazil São Paulo South Mission.At the April 2008 general conference of the church, Teixeira was accepted by the membership of the church as a member of the
First Quorum of the Seventy .Family
Teixeira and his wife Maria Filomena Lopes Teles Grilo have three children.
