Quantum degeneracy

Quantum degeneracy

A quantum degeneracy is a quantum eigenvalue which has more than one linearly independent eigenvector. For instance, the "quantum degeneracy" of the 1s^1 electron configuration within a hydrogen atom is two in the absence of an external magnetic field, because there are two linearly independent 1s spin-orbitals with the same total energy.
