Christianity is a small minority in Mauritania. There are about 4,500 Roman Catholics in Mauritania. The only diocese is the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nouakchott. There are expatriate African churches in Mauritania. There are no more than 200 Protestants (both forigeners and locals combined) in Mauritania. In spite of strict law against evangelization, The Mauritanian Christian community is growing and there are now 400 - 1,000 ethnic Mauritanian Christians[1]. It is reported that in a period of eight months, more than 160 people from Mauritania had seen on the Norwegian / Swedish Christian channel, Miracle Channel in the desert, secretly[2].

Persecution

Distribution of Christian literature and evangelizing of Muslims are prohibited. There hardly is printing and distribution of bibles. Oppression of Christians has increased recently. There are Christians who are arrested due to their faith. Churches have been closed in 2006. Conversion from Islam can be punished with death. New religions cannot be registered.
